Day 66 - We're Done!

May 04

We arrived at our trailer in West Chazy, NY the same as last year, but this time we'll get a quick bit of work done before heading home tonight...

So to sum up...

We travelled 11,275km or 7,006 miles..

We drove through 13 states: New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee...

We slept in 9 of them...

We discovered Green Jays and Kiskadees, Black Tufted Titmouses and snowbirds... the snowbirds don't have wings but do have a warm and cozy nest... thanks again Anne & René

We spent 33 days in Texas, meeting up with roadrunners and a rattlesnake plus many a deer... we found a historic Mission and remembered to visit a more popular historic mission... we toured a ranch and walked a river... or is it Riverwalk? and finally got to the Grand Ole Opry...

Walmarts were still our friends and we added golf courses and a distillery to our overnights...

We had several tornado warnings, a few thunderstorms, relatively little rain and the luck of the Irish guiding our way...we either drove ahead of or came up after bad weather and were spared any real weather extreme... but it wasn't as hot as last year...

We left a lot of Texas behind and did more mileage than last year... a good reason for more trips... there's more to see!

Day 65 - Almost back

May 3

The 'full' breakfast at Howard Johnson's is a little less than full... there were mini bagels but no bread for toasts... there are waffles and syrup, so my sweet tooth is happy...

The plan is pretty straightforward... go as far as we can, as fast as we can... Interstate 81 is the plan until we reach Binghamton New York... W watch the price of gas climb as we race along, and there's not much we can do about it...

We finish up passing through Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania... all the way to New York State... mind you, going through West Virginia & Maryland together takes a little over a half hour... at the New York Visitor Center we step out of the RV... and want to head back south at the next opportunity! the sky was overcast and the temperature had dropped 25-30 degrees... while the Welcome Center itself was a jewel - New York did a really good job here - the weather was not friendly... and then the rain came...

We were planning on taking the Interstate 88 - a new road for us - and our options were Binghamton at rush hour, with whatever traffic that meant, or a GPS bypass... we chose the bypass... a GPS adventure yet again... that section of New York state is hillier than Texas with a few winding steep hills to test our brakes... but we made it through... just as the light rain turned into a much heavier rain that lasted through our arrival in Oneonta and a Walmart... Applebee's for supper and a quick walk through the small shopping mall - where we passed on watching a movie - and on to Walmart for a quick shopping before bedtime... we should be at the trailer in West Chazy tomorrow...

Day 64 - On The Road Again

May 02

Visiting time is over and we have to head home... we get an early start, on the road by 8:00am... leaving East Nashville is a breeze compared with the long slow lines heading into Nashville... we're staying on the Interstate mainly because we want to make good time... we find a Sam's Club for cheap gas and Walmart for some last second food and lost an hour of our lives! We're back in the Eastern time zone!

There's not much especially exciting in trying to get as far as possible while the sun's still out... and trying to stay awake... short night... Louise picked up a Hotel discounts flyer at a Visitor Center and found a Howard Johnson's for $40... about the same as a campground fee... but with walls, a ceiling and free breakfast... that right there can go from $15 to $30...

No photos today... my hands were busy on the steering wheel...

Tomorrow we should get close to Albany... a Walmart parking lot maybe?

Day 63 - Last Day in Nashville

May 01

We figured we'd head into town and get one last look around before heading home tomorrow... 186a9ee0-6c8d-11e9-9e9e-b1872504491a.JPG we took the shuttle in and headed straight for the Country Music Hall of Fame... 0f9a9bd0-6c8d-11e9-a4a7-91fa80b1c5a4.JPG which is a large elaborate multimedia celebration and history of country music...1aa41420-6c8d-11e9-9e9e-b1872504491a.JPG17ccff50-6c8d-11e9-a4a7-91fa80b1c5a4.JPG165d90d0-6c8d-11e9-a4a7-91fa80b1c5a4.JPG13206730-6c8d-11e9-a4a7-91fa80b1c5a4.JPG the exhibits include a few cars... 194dfa00-6c8d-11e9-9e9e-b1872504491a.JPG0c5d9940-6c8d-11e9-a4a7-91fa80b1c5a4.JPG0907b780-6c8d-11e9-a4a7-91fa80b1c5a4.JPG and there's a Hall of Fame Park across the street which includes stars for Hall of Fame Members... 19818d20-6c8d-11e9-9e9e-b1872504491a.JPG

After spending a few hours in the Hall of Fame - the interactive devices can keep you busy for several hours more - we headed back to the strip 144b52a0-6c8d-11e9-a4a7-91fa80b1c5a4.JPG for a taste of Jack's BBQ...14d93ac0-6c8d-11e9-a4a7-91fa80b1c5a4.JPG a Nashville legend...

We took a look at the GooGoo Store just to see...1b4ed310-6c8d-11e9-9e9e-b1872504491a.JPG and then headed back to the campground... there's music planned for tonight and the weather is due to change... sure enough the odd growl of thunder and rain fell... we finished yesterday's supper tonight... that's what leftovers are for... and we heard the strains of music coming from the front... the music was on, the rain has stopped... the singer works karaoke style, the music is on cds backing her up... Louise actually got me up to dance a couple of slow dances... with me in flip flops... tricky...

We stopped to chat with a couple from St-Jean Sur Richelieu who are also camping here... who are camping in their own 19-ft RV...

Tomorrow we head home with a couple of long days' of driving...

Day 62 - The Grand Ole Opry

Apr 30

Today is a relaxing day since we're off to the Grand Ole Opry tonight... we hang around until lunch and then we're heading off to the Opry Mills again for a bit of shopping before the show... we've scoped out a series of restaurants and it'll be a simple matter of deciding on 1... simple... sure...

Before heading out we fill up with propane... we've been using a fair amount and since we don't really have a trustworthy indicator to tell us how much is left we're better off topping up before our final rush to get home... and I learned something new about not overtightening the propane tank bleeder valve... always learning...

The Opry Mills parking lot also works as the parking lot for the Grand Ole Opry... and since it's not very far away the staff figured the cabs wouldn't be happy with a short trip... plus there's a large crowd all leaving at the same time... it's easier if we drive the RV over ourselves...

We do get a little bit of shopping in... we taste test some moonshine but don't buy... again... just not sure on the taste... they have a Bass Pro Shop there too.. 43150380-6c68-11e9-ba81-9fdd87eb5a5e.jpgand we decide to stop in for a drink... at Chili's Restaurant... and get supper too... so much that we have leftovers... good thing the RV is close by...

A quick change... good thing we have the RV with us... and we head slowly towards the Opry... the gates open around 6:00 and people gather at the food trucks as we pass through security... successfully... we find our way in easily and find our seats on the main floor, pretty good seats after all...

The show was well choreographed... they've done this before obviously... the show was great and we enjoyed it immensely... 37d89450-6c68-11e9-ba81-9fdd87eb5a5e.JPG41d7efa0-6c68-11e9-ba81-9fdd87eb5a5e.jpg3c199960-6c68-11e9-ba81-9fdd87eb5a5e.jpg

When the show was over, the "getting out of the theater and parking lot" zoo was on, so we walked over to the hotel to pass the time and snoop around a bit... 3869b0c0-6c68-11e9-ba81-9fdd87eb5a5e.jpg when we went last year we spent a couple of hours getting lost within the hotel... we didn't stay as long this time...

Back we went to find the RV in the parking lot... the road back to the campground was now free of traffic and we found our site easily enough... a whole 10km of travelling...

Tomorrow... maybe downtown again and they have music at the campground... if the weather holds....
